split tones: 1. Start by opening the source file.
2.(orange arrow) activate your Channels palette and (green arrow) select the Red channel. From the Menu bar choose select > all.
3. (red arrow)Click on the RGB channel and (black arrow) activate you layers palette.
4. From the Menu bar choose Edit > copy and Edit > paste it to new layer.
5.(orange arrow) click on "create new fill or adjustment layer" icon and select Curves ...
6. Add a medium Contrast to it.
7. (orange arrow) select the grayscale background and next (green arrow) activate the Channels palette.
8.(green arrow) Hold down the CtrL key and click on Blue Channel. Next click on RGB Channel and (yellow arrow) activate the Layers Palette.
9. From the Menu bar choose Select > Similar, then use the Lasso tool(Hold down the Alt and click) to make some deselection to isolate the sky.
10. From the Menu bar choose Edit>copy and Edit >paste ( to see the area make the other two layers invisible).
11. Now, apply Levels and click ok.
12.(blue arrow) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the layer. this will apply the effect just to your sky. (purple arrow) click on the levels options to edit it again.
13. Change the Input Levels to create a soft tones.
14.(purple arrow)Hold down the Alt key and click to create a new layer icon. Set the blending mode to overlay and make sure the Fill with Overlay ... is selected.
15. (red arrow)Change the Forground color to black , (yellow arrow)select the Brush Tool and change the opacity(blue arrow) to 10-20%. start to create some shadow. Use the white as forground color to highlight the areas.
16.(blue arrow) Now apply the channel Mixer ...
17. Activate the Monochrome.
18. Apply a Greadient Map , select black and white gradient. decrease the layer opacity to half.
19. from the Menu bar choose Select > Color Range ... and apply Midtones. Once more select Curves and apply the effect just to your Midtones.
20. From " New fill or adjustment layer " options apply Hue/saturation.
21. From Menu bar choose Image > apply Image ...
22. Duplicate the layer...
23. Hold down the Ctrl key and hit i key to inverse the effect.
24. Open the hue/saturation Edit box and change the Hue for this layer.
