To understand the phase shifting as an audio effect you have to know how sound waves interact with each other. There are three different ways which waves interact with each other. In phase: waves add together and produce a stronger wave.
Out of phase: waves are upturned and cancel each other out which produce silence.
Varying phases: waves opposed to each other and create a new wave.
By changing the relative phasing between two audio signals an interesting sweeping effect can be created. 1. Open the sound..
2. From the menu bar select Effects > Delay Effects > Sweeping Phaser ...
3. Try to change some characteristics and compare the results.
